Resetting the Shimada Salient Cameras (2024)
Problem: the four Salient cameras in Shimada will show an error for unknown reasons, “Error starting camera.” Three of the four cameras are subordinate to the primary camera, which is connected to Port 36 on the Shimada-MDF-SW2 switch, which provides power via PoE. They will operate for weeks at a time, and then go dark for reasons unknown. A reboot of the primary camera fixes the issue, but since it’s located in the ceiling, it’s difficult to get to leaving us to turn power off at the source.
Solution: Reset the camera by turning off its power supply from the switch, then turning it back on.
Steps to Reset:
-
Login to the 2nd Shimada switch here: https://172.16.80.2/
- Proceed past any security warnings from Chrome, if prompted.
- Click OK on the Pre-Login Banner.
- Username: admin
- Password: Quaker1313!
- Click the Login button.
-
From the Dashboard, click on PoE from the left menu.
- Near the bottom under Interfaces, scroll down the port list and select port 1/1/36. It will highlight in orange.
- Click the Edit button above the port list.
-
A small window will appear at center titled Edit PoE Details. Check the Interface Name field to ensure you have selected the right port, 1/1/36. It's also displayed at the top of the main screen of the switch.
-
Scroll down and find Power Enable, which has two options allowing you to switch power on or off. Click the button for Disabled, then click the Change button at the bottom.
-
The switch confirms the change with a banner highlighted in green. Click the Close button.
- Wait 60 seconds for Salient to register a disconnect.
- Using the same procedure from steps 4-6, switch power back on by changing the setting from Disabled to Enabled.
- Wait at least 60 seconds for one or more cameras to start to show a feed, or a green box next to it. All four cameras do not start at once, but often you will see two of them come up on the first refresh, then the next two. If they do not all start within five minutes, or some are up while others are down, repeat turning power off and on again. Try it a third time if necessary, and wait longer between steps each time, otherwise call for service.
You can view the startup progress of the cameras by logging into the Salient Camera server (newsalient.fcs.edu) over Remote Desktop.
After connecting over Remote Desktop, click the Connect button when the Recording Server screen appears (set to start when logging in to Windows). There is no password.
On the right side of Salient is the list of camera views. Clicking on 1-14 will show the view on the camera selected. The cameras we are concerned with are:
Shimada (1)
Shimada (2)
Shimada (3)
Shimada (4)
When dark, the green icon will become black, and the Description will state, “Stopped Camera.”
